I really don't see the purpose in criticizing people that you don't even know based on their body weight. Obesity is a complex social issue that runs deeper than mere "motivation". For example, some people have metabolic disorders, or other health conditions that make it extremely difficult for them to exercise regularly. Or if someone truly "lets themselves go" to that extent, they are probably struggling with some form of depression. Perhaps someone has used food as a coping device for the pain in their lives, or have become addicted to unhealthy foods on a psychological level... Not everyone can afford a therapist, or has the self-knowledge or education to figure everything out for themselves. Some people's body sizes are greatly influenced by genetics. There's a million reasons why someone could be obese that we are completely clueless about until we take the time to get to know someone.
I'm not saying you need to go out and date an obese person. I'm just saying, the world would probably be a much better place if people stopped making such shallow surface judgments of each other.
If you were closer (I'm in Boston) I'd give you a big hug. Thank you for, once again, ptntiug yourself on the line, to raise awareness of another very successful fear-driven hard sell. I'm guessing this is a sore and sensitive subject for many and that some women feel totally betrayed. I believe the less we are exposed to radiation of any sort, the better. Don't want to disturb my molecules!Personally, I tune out in October with all its pink-ribbon subtle and not-so subtle messages. Just learned believe it is November that has become diabetes-awareness month. We even have months now to sell disease! Why not for starters a nutrition awareness October, when crops are harvested, instead?
Very true Linda but how did we reach this point? Portion sizes number one in my book. Take McDonalds when they first opened when we were kids. What was a meal? It was a small fry and small cheeseburger the equivalent of the childs happy meal today. And it’s true of all the restaurants, most servings are enough to feed 2 people. That wasn’t always the case. I think our country and others are getting to the breaking point with soaring medical costs associated with obesity and are now trying desperately to reverse this trend. It took decades to reach this point and I fear it will take decades to reverse it.
I was surprised that my BMI wasn’t higher than 22.6 since muscle weighs more than fat! LOL Even though my BMI is in the normal range, I need to get back to my exercise regiment. I have been neglectful the last couple of weeks. When I don’t exercise regularly I tend to snack more on non-healthy foods. I believe the 18.5 is a typo and should be 19.5 since the overweight range is 5 points then the normal should be 19.5 making it a 5 point range making the underweight of 19.5 correct.Gino
